Day 1 - Depart US to ShanghaiMeals: In-Flight Meals
Embark on a memorable journey when you board China Eastern's non-stop flight to Shanghai via Boeing777-300 featuring personal entertainment system for each passenger. En route, cross the International Dateline and lose one day.
Flight Detail: SFO to Shanghai is 14.5 hours non-stop. JFK to Shanghai is 15 hours non-stop.
Day 2 - Arrive ShanghaiMeals: In-Flight Meal
Arrive at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 6:00 pm local time. You will be greeted by our experienced tour guide outside the customs. Tonight, you will enjoy a night cruise on the Huangpu River and the famous Shanghai Bund. To experience the best way to enjoy the scenery along Huangpu River, a cruise has to be the top choice. A Huangpu River cruise has now become a must-have activity when visiting Shanghai. When cruising at night, you can enjoy the most extraordinary sights. This way of travel not only appeals to visitors but also the local people who sometimes choose a river cruise for relaxation.
Day 3 - Shanghai to NoboribetsuMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Hokkaido. Upon arrival, you will travel to Noboribetsu. Noboribetsu Onsen is Hokkaido's most famous hot spring resort. Many types of hot spring water surface in Noboribetsu s in the spectacular Jigokudani or "Hell Valley" just above the resort town.
This evening, you will have a scenic night stroll through Hell Valley. At night, the Hell Valley has a magical atmosphere. At night the footpath through Hell Valley is lit up. These lights glowing in the eerie dark and steam make for an otherworldly experience not to be missed. Tonight, you will enjoy a traditional Japanese course dinner.
Day 4 - Noboribetsu to Datejidai-mura to HakodateMeals: Breakfast
Today’s adventure will start with visit to Noboribetsu Datejidai-mura. Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura is a history theme park highlighting the Edo Period, one of the most attractive eras in Japanese history. Step back in time to enjoy traditional games, activities, theaters, street performances and more. The charm of ancient Japan is abundant as you mingle with the Ninja and Oiran courtesans so symbolic of the Edo Period. There are plenty of activities such as dressing as a Geisha or practicing your ninja skills on the targeting range, or take in one of the shows to see how it’s really done.
You can also enjoy different shows that are available:
- History's famous Ninja is the star of Kasumi Ninja House, where you can relive the exciting times of the Ninja through the action show.
- The Japanese Culture Theater specializes in human dramas featuring audience participation. Come and marvel at the dazzling depictions of Edo social life: the flashy Oiran concubines, the merrymaking, the spectacle.
- This winter-limited show presents a cool swordplay of Samurais. Please enjoy the historical comedy with new sense, which is a harmony of humor and Samurai’s noble spirit called “Bushi-Do.”
Afterwards, you will travel to Hakodate and visit Mount Hakodate at night. Awarded the highest rating of three stars in the "Michelin Green Guide Japan", the view from Mt. Hakodate is described as "worth taking time out to see." Tourists from around the world flock to Mt. Hakodate throughout the year. The glow of the city lights is reflected off the whiter-than-white snow that envelops the city, enhancing the dazzling night view.
Day 5 - Hakodate to Lake ToyaMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, you will visit Goryokaku Park & Tower. Enjoy viewing Japan's first western-style pentagram castle, designated as a special historical site from the two-story observation platform of Goryokaku Tower, which stands 107 meters tall. Look at the 16 views of Goryokaku on a scenic model called "Memorial Pole" and learn the history of Goryokaku with graphical displays in the Goryokaku History Gallery on the second floor of the observation platform. Situated on the first floor of the observation platform is an all-weather glass atrium filled with plants and greenery. This comfortable sunlit retreat offers visitors a place to sit and rest during their visit in Goryokaku
Afterward, you will have a chance to experience the Hakodate Fish Market. With over 450 shops and nearly 1.8 million visitors annually, this is a fun and tourist-friendly market. The stall owners love to chat with tourists and explain their items, even if you have no intention on buying. You have many options of what you can do in this market: eat one of the freshest Donburi Rice bowls in your life, send fish and produce to family abroad, try fresh fruit and ice cream, or evening go squid fishing for your own squid sashimi. Later, you will travel to Lake Toya and enjoy a traditional Hot Spring soak before a traditional Japanese course dinner.
Day 6 - Lake Toya to JozankeiMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, you will have free time to explore around Lake Toya. You can soak in one of the many hot springs around town to soothe your muscles and soul or take an optional Steamboat cruise to Nakajima Island in the center of Lake Toya. The cruise boats run to the middle of the lake and the four islands that make up Nakajima. Surrounded by the sound of gently lapping waves, passengers look out at Mt. Yotei, Showa Shinzan and Mt. Usu and the magnificent surrounding countryside. No matter what the season, the views are always spectacular.
Afterwards, your journey will continue to the Jozankei Hot Springs. With over 2.4 million visitors per year, the Jozankei Hot Springs is one of the most popular hot spring districts in Hokkaido. Tonight, you will enjoy a traditional Japanese course dinner.
Day 7 - Jozankai to OtaruMeals: Breakfast
This morning, you will have ample time to stroll through Jozan Gensen Park. This park was built to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Miizumi Jozan, an ascetic monk who built the foundation for Jozankei Hot Springs. A rich Jozankei forest fills the park that includes a footbath, a knee-deep bath and a bath where eggs can be boiled, as well as hot spring falls and a trail among wild plants.
Afterwards, continue on your way to the city of Otaru. Since the 1880s, this port city has been sometimes known as the “Venice of Japan”. Otaru has preserved its historic and picturesque canals lined with brick warehouses and gas lights. The Venice connection has been expanded to include a new focus on glass-blowing in the city. Along the way, you will get to see the scenic beauty of Jozenkai mountainside as well as passing by Asari Dam and Lake Sapporo.
Day 8 - Otaru to SapporoMeals: Breakfast, Lunch
After breakfast, you will have a free morning to explore Otaru on your own. Take time to check out the Herring Mansions or Sakaimachi Street, a beautifully preserved merchant street in central Otaru. The street is only a short walk from the city’s canal area. This street houses most of the cafes and restaurants that the area is known for. You can also visit the glass workshops around town. When the herring fishing industry started to have its decline in the 1950s, the makers of glass buoys had to find other ways to support themselves. They quickly shifted over to making glassware for locals and people of nearby towns. Otaru still benefits greatly from the reputation of its glassware, which you can buy and take home to show-off to your friends.
Afterwards, you will travel to Sapporo and have a special crab lunch buffet. You will continue on with a stop by Tanukikoji - Sapporo’s Oldest Shopping Arcade. Since 1873, this roofed arcade has over 200 shops and considered one of Hokkaido’s must see attractions.
Day 9 - Sapporo to ShanghaiMeals: Breakfast
After a leisurely breakfast, you will transfer to the Chitose International Airport for you flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival in the afternoon, you will be greeted by your tour guide outside the customs and be transferred to TianZiFang, a famous historical neighborhood with artsy atmosphere. The guide will show you the former French Concession and the tourist attraction XinTianDi. Xin Tian Di has become the best place for visitors to appreciate the history and modern life of Shanghai, and is also a meeting place for local citizens and foreign visitors. This evening is free to explore the city on your own.
Day 10 - Depart Shanghai to USMeals: Breakfast, In-Flight Meal
We hope you enjoyed your time in China and will be leaving this country with endless amounts of stories, memories, and captivating pictures of the entire journey. You will be transferred to the airport and Air China will take you home on the same day.
